In our pursuit of making disciples and maturing in Christ, we have 5 ways in which we seek to accomplish this. We want to:
- REACH people for Christ
- FEED the people of Christ with the word of Christ
- NURTURE the people of Christ in a caring community
- TRAIN the people of Christ for life and ministry
- PARTNER with the people of Christ for the expansion of gospel ministry
Reaching people for Christ (Matt 28:19-20, Col 1:28-29, Rom 10:9-15). This drives all that we do. We long to see people come to know God, to enter into his joy in his Son Jesus and we want to get the gospel out in as many ways as we can. We want to be faithful witnesses both as individuals and as a church. We long that the church would grow as new people put their faith in Jesus. Every Sunday people will hear the good news of the gospel. We also have regular events throughout the year where the gospel is clearly communicated, as well as pre-evangelism events. Through our growth groups we aim to support one another in evangelism in our communities and work place.
Feeding the people of Christ (2 Tim 4:1-2, 1 Cor 2:1-5). The Word of God is central to all that happens at City. The word is our authority, the means by which Christ rules his church, and the instrument of the Spirit in people’s salvation and sanctification. The preaching of the word is central to our Sunday services, and all of our ministries (children, youth, mid-week, etc.) are involved in teaching the bible to those who attend.
Nurturing the people of Christ (1 Thes 2:7-8, 1 Pet 5:1-3). The church, the body of Christ, is to be a place of care and community. This happens on Sundays, in our mid-week growth groups, and within friendships within the church. We want to be a caring community and meet the needs of one another, both spiritual and physical.
Training the people of Christ (Eph 4:11-12, 2 Tim 2:2). One of the purposes of the church is for the training and equipping of God’s people for the work of ministry. The reality is, everyone is a minister. And we aim to prepare people for service to Christ in the church. This happens at every level, with the whole church, within specific ministries and teams, and with the leadership of the church. We are all called to serve and we want to make sure people are ready
Partnering with the people of Christ (Phil 1:3-5, Col 4:16). We are an independent evangelical church, but we are not isolationists. We are a member of the FIEC and also the Yorkshire Gospel Partnership. We have good relations and involvement with a number of other local churches. The mission of the church and expansion of God’s kingdom is far bigger and greater than our small patch, and we want to be aware of and involved in the bigger picture. We also have a number of mission partners, both in the UK and overseas.
